Good old Sims Switch Blade w. woodden sidewalls.
Binding was greatly improved by replacing the standard fasteners with stainless steel hooks. Bindings used to pop open during landings....
Still have some ok Sims baseplates if anyone needs one or two. |

Sims prototype with the Toft skate deck on top. Similar to this one.
Then I got a Burton Backhill and proceeded to get kicked off every mountain ski resort in the Rockies.  |

BDS forum is down right now, so I thought I would check out what's going on here. It has been a long time since I have posted anything, although I have lurked now and then.
I was surprised to see a picture of my brother's Sims Lonnie Toft snowboard in Slob's post. (That is his picture from his eBay listing). I was really ticked when he sold that board on eBay. I first rode that board when my brother got it in 1977 or 1978. I remember he took it out to the local ski area here in the Milwaukee area and talked the lift op into letting him take it up the lift. I just watched him and laughed as he wobbled down the hard pack with no way to turn. It worked okay in powder though. Got to give my brother credit. He stayed with it, while I just kept skiing. Later, he got a Burton Elite Performer, which I now have in my collection. He wanted to sell that one too, but I snagged it.
My first board was a 1987 Burton Cruzer 165 (rainbow colors). I sold it a few years later to upgrade to a 1990(?) Burton Air (purple). Been nothing but Burtons ever since. I scored a Malolo recently and just tried it out. Very nice board.

| Burton Cruiser 165 which I snagged from our shop`s demo fleet at the end of `88. I later sold it at a ski swap, but have another one I got off ebay last year. My 2nd board was a Craig Kelly Mystery Air I bought new in `90. I rode it for about five years before hooking up with Sims boards. Craig even came up to Ak with the Burton rep and we hung out at Koots and had a few beers. This was after he won his last (4th consecutive?) US open at Statton, Vt. He came back and rode in Ak many times after that, but sadly I never got to make turns with him. The board is now in the hands of my son`s stepdad, but I`ll probably buy or trade something to get it back someday. |

Cool story Ak. Kelly was awesome. And you mentioned two boards I wish I still had in my collection. I would really like to have nice examples of the Cruzer 165 I used to have and also a first generation Mystery Air. They were such cool boards.
I took my new-to-me Malolo out to Whistler last season and that board was awesome. Very maneuverable through the trees yet still stable on big groomers. Now I want to get my hands on Terje's other design, the T6, and try that out. If it is as responsive as the Malolo, I know I will like it. |
