Vilms--I'm not exactly sure what you mean by 'lining the kid up for the sausage factory', (or that bit about the girl with the sloppily put together lines), so I freely acknowledge that I may be totally misunderstanding your point and perspective, but I just wanted to throw in my two cents as to where I can only guess the criticism and disparagement (even if unintended) is coming from.
His initial post clearly mentioned both academics and the fact that Harvard is very interested in him, and I don't think that the overall focus was on his son's athletic prowess, which I gather is what you're suggesting he think about setting his sights higher than.
Unlike most large American colleges and universities, Harvard (as well as the rest of the Ivy League) does not offer athletic scholarships. The Ivy League has a very prestigious reputation for academics, and a laughable reputation for athletics with a few isolated examples (fringe sports like crew, lacrosse, and other less mainstream sports). If GR was more focused on how his son being viewed as a star athlete, his initial post would have been about Miami, USC, etc., which are both two of the strongest and most storied football programs in the country. Those two schools have had legendary teams for years and years. Ivy League games aren't even nationally televised, and are probably only televised in New England on public access channels. I can't think of an apt comparison, but I wanted to point out that you might be jumping to conclusions about the relative priority of athletics over anything else simply because you may not have realized the particulars of the circumstances.
It sounds like you both have great kids in their own rights, and I'm sure that they'd get along well with one another.
I just thought I'd try to explain what I thought might be the source of some of the disconnect. I'm fucking exhausted, and I don't feel like I articulated my point very clearly, but thought I may as well take a stab at it anyway... |

Wow! That's awesome. COngratulations, you have every right to be proud. Let the malcontents eat cake. Considering the crap that I just went throught with my eight year old this weekend, I'll be lucky if the local community college takes notice. |

GFR, you have every right to brag about your son. He's truly an amazing kid(BIG KID)! I have had the opportunity to meet and skate with GFR and some of his groms, I tip my glass to you for raising such fine well gifted children. Anyone who has 10 kids and have the oldest one be recognized for his academics and his athletic abiltities can brag all day long!! I can't even imagine what the rest of your children will excel in by your oldest setting and accomplishing his goals as a young adult. So if any of you have anything negative to say, save for another thread!! This dad Rocks! |

Hey Dave,
That's great! Congrats. Hard to believe that my son will be 1 year old in 2 weeks. Time sure flies. Can you remember when your first kid was as young as your newest addition?
You should especially be proud that you've raised your children by a standard that is much highter than anything that a athletic or academic scholarship can give them in life.
Drop me an email, I still have those Staab stickers for you... |

thanks PPC ( and too all the others for the positive comments.)
I remember things he did when he was younger but have to pull out the baby pics for actuals....the mrs has all that locked in her head though. heck she remembers the time and what day - not date - that they were all born on.
For a guy that never wanted to have kids..to one that now has his cup running over..I wouldn't change a thing.
later skaters. |
