I keep a log of Ebay prices on the stuff I have.. It might not work with the insurance company, but it's better then nothing. You can also keep your receipts and print out the Ebay auction as you win them etc..
Outt..

Homeowner's/Renter's Insurance should cover most any loss at a value determined by the Insurance Company. Now, how they would reference prices for skateboards is beyond me but I'm sure that it's been done. There is also coverage called a PAP (Personal Articles Policy) with which you can buy additional insurance at a dollar amount per hundred, thousand, or however a particular company operates (the actual wording and/or coverage wil vary by company). I keep all of my Paypal and Ebay receipts for reference and you could probably even use AOS for a reference but it all comes down to what they are willing to pay you if you don't already have x amount of specific insurance. You could probably visit their website and find some sort of info about additional coverage or talk to your agent since that's what they are paid to do even though they'll probably have to get back with you after talking to someone like me. Here's a link to give you a better idea of how to keep track of possible losses.

Like I said the only sure thing is getting your collection appraised.
otherwise if you have a total loss the insurance company will tell you what you are getting and I'm pretty sure it will not be as much as it's worth.
I called this guy Robert Connelly the other day his phone # 607-722-9593
email: [email protected]
He apraises sports memorobilia and is in NY somewhere.
He told me to send him as much info about the boards as possible
(pictures, names, invoice, my estimate, etc. ......)
I don't know what his rate is (it's billed by the hour he has to spend working on finding informations about the boards. So the more info you send the cheaper it is)
so there you have it |

@Queue. Own. My collection is located at a recreation room(garage) in the back of my parents house. Their home insurance is Allstate. I gave them a call and they say they dont cover these kinds of things.
@Plywood and VA thanx for the info guys, that helps out a lot. |

There is a 2500 dollar limit on the flood policy for artwork, jewlry, furs, and collections of any kind. That isn't individual either but total. If you keep your collection in the basement and it gets flooded out by rain water not a pipe busting then there is no coverage. Only contents items covered in a basement under the flood policy is washer, dryer, food freezer, and the food in it. I pissed a lot of people of in Pittsburg this year.
I don't have a rider for my board collection but I do for my gun collection because there is a 1K limit. |

I actually brought this up with my guy on Saturday and was going to start a thread on it.
My dude is an older guy who really didn't understand very much of what I was trying to get across to him. It probably didn't help that I was meeting with him at 9:00 AM after being completely and totally obliterated on that Budweiser Select demonspawn with only a couple of hours of sleep in between...
Anyway, I have asked him here and there about it in the past, but since we were retooling all of our policies to take the whole marriage thing into account, I wanted to try to nail him down on it. He basically said that under the current terms of my renter's policy, I'd be compensated for a like replacement.
He told me that they'd pay for a new skateboard from the store, to which I explained that we were talking about very rare pieces of artwork that were approximately 20 years old, some of which are the only ones I know of. When I told him we were talking about 60 or so decks with an estimated cost of $4-5,000 and a current value likely higher than that, he didn't really know what to tell me, since he was unaware of how I could go about getting an ironclad appraisal that would satisfy the home office.
He mentioned that for more conventional collections, they tend to use more accepted price guides (Beckett's, etc.) to gauge replacement value, but he didn't know what I should do, other than find someone to appraise everything if I wanted a separate policy on them.
I kind of doubt that AoS is all that it would take to satisfy claims adjusters to settle in a manner that many of us would be content with, and while it would have been smart to keep a printout of all ebay transactions from the get-go, it doesn't do much good if you're too far past that, and private party deals are a separate ball of wax altogether.
I know we've got a couple more insurance guys around here, hopefully they'll chime in with some assistance. San Diego Oldschooler? Conscience? |
