yep... surfing dude... surfing. my knees are fucked with arthritis... skating is just too painful. so surfing is the ultimate low impact substitute for skating. you get the same level/kind of stoke but without the slams... just as long as youre good at swimming and avoiding sharks.
water is cold right now (around 15 degrees), but its warming up. get yourself a 3.2mm steamer and an 8-9foot minimal (good starting board), and get out to gunnamatta (its about 20 min from Tootgarook). or pop down to Venus Bay and hang at my place... we can be equally shit ex-skater > n00b surfers together.
funnily enough i was in Tootgarook last weekend, checking out the beach house i used to stay in as a kid! corner of morris and raymond!!! |

^^^^^.
Ha......I just bought in Morris st.
Lived in Rye 10 years prior.
Yep surfing and spearfishing are still up there for me.
I'll always skate.....but not so hard..... I was really blown away with the radical shit you can do at these jump parks........I rate them high.
Funny I had a girlfriend in the 90's and her family had a holiday house in Inverloch........We looked at buying a beachfront block of land in Venus bay for $10,000.....thought the drive around Anderson Inlet was too long.
.....We went overseas instead.............Can only imagine what it's worth today. |

Im nearly 55, and still roll at least three times a week, usually more. I suck but Im having a crack. There is a dude in regional Vic in his mid 60's, he still frontside grinds and rolls around.
Love surfing but way too fucking cold for me down here, I paddle out when I go north and get amongest. |

it's not the age, it's the number of slams and types of damage your body had to endure…
I was skating better at 42 than I was in my 20's and 30's. then boom, one fracture and a bunch of complications, and I was back to zero … or close to. no more vert skating for me now, my knee wouldn't take the bails. some mellow street skating and some pool is OK.
surfing is definetely something that appeals to people that love the rush of going down a transition and hitting the next wall… enjoy it if you're not living in a landlocked country like me… only 7 weeks before I hit the beach again, yay!! |
