| I have a question for you guys. For those who have had a 10-15 yr layoff from skating, what are you guys skating. Are you getting your old boards you use to skate and paying buku bucks for them and riding? Or do you buy used boards to ride with. Just curious. |

My time off from skating tranny was over 20 years.. In Sep of 99 they built a new concrete skatepark an hour from me.. In Nov of 99, I went shopping for a board for my stepson, and found outt about it. I couldn't believe how things had changed, but caught the bug again anyways, and here I am, 2 years later, skating every week. Last Sunday I drove over 10 hours both ways to skate a clover bowl in Milwaukee.. Yeah it was worth it.
I'm skating Bulldog 32" and 34" x 10" single kick decks. Indy's, and Beer City 65/95 wheels.

I was off a board for over... Hmmm.... over 5 years at least. I stopped skating when the wheel sizes got down into the 40 mm range.
I just got back into it and there's no way I'd go skate an old school deck. First of all it's a waste of an "antique" but also the new stuff is way better. Pick up a new board and then pick up an old board... hell... cut the old board into a new school shape and still pick it up... the weight difference is amazing. Now try to kickflip a 10" board. Enough said.

| Ham, never said "I" took a "15yr" layoff...and for the record, i did take my old school deck down the driveway this morning w/ out wipin out....practice, practice and just when you think you got it down, practice some more.......late |

Don't skate an old school deck, boards have evolved for a reason. With that in mind, don't skate one of those bullshit Popsicle Stick boards that they are force-feeding the kids at the local skate shops.
To help you out: if you plan to skate bowls, parks, and/or vert, get a board at least 9" to 9 1/2". The Beer City Duane Peters and Jay Adams Z-Flex immediately jump to mind. Some of the Scum Boards also fit the bill. Get Indy 166 trucks and wheels that are either 95 or 97 durometers by 58mm or 60mm. The places that have good prices and I recommend are as follows:

They sell the Duane Peters board that I ride. I just love this shape but they no longer make it in the less expensive "no graphic deck" (it's 9 1/2" x 32" pool/ramp/ditch board. By the way, all prices at Beer City include shipping)

They have the biggest selection. Check out their "Pool Boards" section. They are reputable and ship quickly.

Although I'd take an old DP or Olson over anything new, one can't discount the new Alva boards. They rock!
