Hello all~ As you may have seen, I'm giving up a lot of my collection, (as well as other possessions) and this is part of the reason. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to realize a small profit from doing art on skateboards, (and maybe other wooden objects later on...)

I need some tips, advice, whatever. Ive only got these four done, and two more near-done, so obviously, I have much work to do in order to have a body of work to show. I have only recently set up a small studio in the garage attic where I can work full time with no distractions...I am here alone nights at present, so I'm taking advantage of my 'house time' at the moment; husband will be off all summer...

Another thing worth mentioning is I'm having to allergy-proof the house as well as possible, since I have become so sensitive to dust, mold, etc...It sucks, but has to be done...Just takes a little more of my time right now...

<> The first question I have is...<>, Looking at the decks I have here, what ballpark is a realistic asking price? I know the question is where would I be offering them, so that's what else I need to know. You'd also wonder how long I work on each one, I'd guess, but I don't want that to be a deciding factor yet... I am currently paying about $20 including shipping per bare-wood deck.

This is what I really want to do, so I'm willing to work as many hours a week on them as I need/ have to....

I need to make, (clear, that is), at least $200 a week, bare minimum, in our current financial situation.

This is an all-or-nothing deal for me, no part-time/ hobby-like endeavor...In other words, if I fail at this, I go back to work at a 'job'.

My digit-cam pics, as always, leave much to the imagination, so I will say these look much better in person, but for now, here's what I can show:

Here's a close-up of two side by side, to show a bit more detail:

I guess I should include a small 'artist's statement', I think they call them: SO...
I look at a bare skateboard as the perfect canvas for my artwork. I do whimsical 'nature scenes' that are on the verge of fantastic, but just shy of mawkish. My love for God's creatures goes deeper than appreciation of what is cute and cuddly... I strive to present scenes that show just how much beauty and diversity there is in the natural world, even one that borders on fantasy, and why we should'nt take any of the smallest things in our world for granted... These skateboards act as a kind of window to see IN...as much as something to look AT as an ordinary object...

Hi there...Just a question really...are you marketing these towards the end user or a manufacturer? It looks to me like you`ve got blanks, and are painting them up to sell to the end user, right?

I know this might sound shittty, but as a general rule..arts only worth what you can get for it, i don`t know if there is a set price for handpainted art?

This is my obstacle, if you will. To answer the first part of the question, I paint these blanks, and will sell to whomever will buy them. If I could sell two a week for $200, then I could make a 'profit', for example.

But in the real world, is that possible?

PS... I am self-taught, and do intend to do better and better work the more I do. These are my first efforts...

Hmmm...I`m not sure really, but you`ve got to ask yourself, is there a market at all? Do you know of any places in your general zone where artwork is sold? Craft Markets perhaps?

And another thing i could see being a problem...how many people do you think will spend $200 bucks on an unknown artists work, when you can pick up a fresh deck for less....

But that aside, You`ve got yourself an idea....now`s the fun bit of trying to make it work...no amount of planning, guestamation will do this for you...Bite the bullet.

Yes, the marketing thing, Jesus, if I could leave it to someone else, I could save all my time for working just on the art, and therefore, produce more works.

And that is a BIG issue for me: Here I am, nobody. Why would anybody want any of my work? Why would they pay over $50 for it, or would they even consider it? This is a tough one.

Furthermore, I need to show these outside the US, because, let's face it, Americans don't appreciate art as much as the rest of the world, generally speaking.
That being said, no local artsy-craftsy thing is gonna work as a venue, I don't think.

I feel like I need to go to some extreme, just not sure what yet!

Put 'em on eBay under skateboards and art. Start at $200 - someone will buy them. They do look pretty cool.

In a recent issue of Tattoo magazine there was an artist who had a skate art display event which featured art on blank decks.

It is issue #190 and the article can be found on page 87. Main mentioned fellow is Canadian, Craig Driscoll. I'll email you his contact information.

You obviously have a habit of painting,
Does that come from your need for cash, or because you like to paint them alot.
I don't know where this will lead you but I have one thing to suggest.

Photograph your work, then shrinkwrap and sign / date it.
One day you might be happy to have your collection.
Look at it as building a resume, while making collectables.
Good luck.
