I would say...
Keep the paint to a minimum, use enamel, sand the surface well,(paint hates sealer) don't clearcoat it, use a low pressure gravity feed gun if possible. Graphics...
light colors over dark paint won't come out clear unless they are super opaique or blocked with white primer.
There is what you need to start, experiment and then tell me what happens....and also if I was wrong about something.
I stopped doing them cause it is extra work

Ok, I suggest that if you bought a low pressure gun, get a regulator, and run around 20 psi.
If you have a normal pressure gravity gun ,get a regulator and go at around 60 psi.
Get a regulator with a line filter.

Water base is fine if you were painting a house or something, but enamel is best because it does not make the deck sticky when you rial slide or lip slide.
It also does not require a clear coat. I would get some oil base enamel and some thinner. Try a base coat, fine sand/steel wool, then thin finish coat. Post the pics as a progression.-Milt

Thats a good question,
If you are planning on super light color, or painting over a dark dyed veneer...maybe. It will however effect the slide of the deck. (makes it sticky when boardsliding)
White works fine in a three stage coat over plain bare veneer.
It might show a darker color veneer under it.
Try black, grey, red...ect.
The initial base coat should be spotty and transparent.
The second, and maybe third coats are full length passes using thinned enamel. For ech stage do a very fine color sand and before your last coat use steel wool.
Try to extend the drying times as long as possible, days even.
I bet you'll get good at it pretty quick.
And I still would love to see pics.

Oh yeah I forgot this... you are probably getting sealed blanks, so a quick sanding to rough the surface is preferred. If you are getting bare wood then sanding to even the surface is preferred.
