Hi,
I have 500 plus VHS skate videos because I have worked at & owned a skateshop shop for many years. I want to step into the future and put them on DVD for my personal use & as well then I can lend out a few of the rare ones to friends and stuff without worrying about their VCRs eating my tape. I have a new Dell 8400 computer with pentium 4 w/3.2 GHZ Ram and 1 gig diskspace and I am looking to spend around $200 Canadian (US$150) or under.

Does anyone currently know of a good hardware and software system for this?

I was thinking of getting an external device rather than internal does it really matter?

Is there anything I should look out for that is bad?

I have currently looked at:
-Dazzle 150 with pinnacle studio quickstart $200
-ATI TV Wonder Pro with Remote $150

What else is out there in that price range and quality?

I was recommended towards the Dazzle 150 and it sounds like it is what I want but I have seen All bad reviews on amazon and other sites.
Is it really that bad?

And if so what is better for what I want?

Also if I get these devices can I use it to run my LPs and cassetes in my computer to burn them to DVD?

Anyones help will be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Futile

I use a hauppauge PVR 250. It does hardware mpeg2 encoding, so you can capture directly to a dvd-compatible file. And the quality is excellent, IMO. I've seen them for around $100, although I think most places sell them for around $120-130.

You still have to author the dvd, and for that I use TMPGEnc DVD Author, although if you want more menu custimization, there are much better (but more expensive) programs available. If you want to edit the captured file before authoring, two good programs for that are VideoRedo and Womble Mpeg-Vcr.

Ati cards are supposedly pretty good for direct-to-mpeg caps, although they put a greater load on the CPU since they don't do hardware encoding, but it sounds like you have a pretty fast computer so this shouldn't be a problem. Also, with an ATI card you can capture to avi (uncompressed, and much bigger than mpeg), which would allow you to apply filters to clean up noise or improve color in shitty video before encoding it to mpeg2. I don't know much about the dazzle products, but I don't think they are highly recommended. I have heard that Canopus DV converters are a pretty good way to go.

Check out videohelp.com and doom9.net for info on pretty much anything you need to know on this or related topics.

One thing to think about - the best way to get the highest quality when putting your vhs tapes onto dvd is by starting at the source. If you have a shitty vcr it really doesn't matter if you have the best analog-to-digital conversion method in place. If the video coming out of you vcr looks bad there's only so much you can do to improve it. If you really have 500 tapes to go through, you might want to think about getting a nice JVC vcr. The hr-s9911u is their current model with all the bells and whistles. It's got a few functions that can help stabilize video with bad tracking and also has a nice video filter to remove noise. You can find factory refurbished units for around $250, which might be a little steep.

As for converting tapes and LP's to dvd, I've never really thought about that, but I'd think you could just run a pair of RCA cables from your stereo to the line in on you sound card, record them to .wav files, and burn them onto CD, although you might want to use a good audio editor like Sound Forge to reduce noise or somehow improve the sound quality before you burn them. Why would you want them on dvd? You could fit more on a dvd, but you couldn't play it in a regular cd player. I know you can make dvd's that are just audio and play in a regular dvd player, but I've never looked into how to do it. I'm sure you could find out how on those websites I listed above.

Hope some of this is useful.

Oh yeah, if you do decide on an ATI card, look at digitalfaq.com before purchasing to help decide which one, and after purchasing for detailed info on how to use it. It's a good website, and the guy who runs it posts a lot on videohelp.com.

Thanks for the info Brent212. I will defintley check out those websites. Also some of the mentioned products sound good too.

I am not real computer savvy so the more basic programs you mentioned will work better for me. I am mostly concerned with preserving the quality and ease of use not sure how many effects and stuff I would add.

Thanks again for your information and time.
