i am going to be anonymous on this post as i don't want to get slated but i want opinions> Is a debate that will never die but didn't Santa Cruz decks kick powell peralta ass when it came to riding, let alone the designs. i don't think there is one powell deck that can better the neptune or the reaper or toybox for that matter, the birdclaw was just about the closest powell got, a lot of people mention the vallely elephant but the shape of the deck screwed the great design work, the only reason powell was bigger was its riders which is fair enough but when it comes to the quality odf the actual decks and designs there is no comparison, i just wanted some views on the subject. |

in general i agree, but man,a lance mountain future primitive deck kicks ass!!!
also, you are talking late 80's,early 80's peralta pigs were the best in there time.peraltas graphics in the early eighties kicked santa cruz's graphics ass,and they lead the way to what graphics became.
i guess i'm being the devil's advocate here becouse i'm way more into santa cruz than powell. |

I guess it depends on which years you are talking about. In my opinion the Powell decks between 86-89 or so, were very poorly constructed. The concave in alot of the decks was poor, and they were not that great for street. Santa Cruz decks on the other hand I think were made better.
However when it comes to 1990-1993 Powell decks, I was really into their constructiona dn design, they were going in another direction with and they were a solid ride.
But since Santa Cruz made the Spidey deck and the Cell Block 3, I'd have to give them the advantage:) But I like both so I won't pick one.. |

Come-on, if we're talking early '80s here, I can't believe we're even discussing this.... Powell blows dudes. They had some good (great) riders like Cab and Ray Bones, but the decks sucked bad. Sure they had some cutsey graphics on them but they were weak and felt like crap when you road them -- unless you're 4'9" like Cab, then it really didn't matter.
On the other hand, Santa Cruz decks were tough as shit (Canadian Hard Rock Maple) and had some very classic designs - like the early Duane Peters decks and the Steve Olson decks etc.
Man... I forgot how much I despised those little Bones Brigaders that would show up at the ramp in their camoflage gear... |

SLOB AIR lay down the law, POWELL sucked shit, SC did the best decks, graphics wise as well. The best printer around at that time was also the guy who had BRAND X, if you look at the printing on the decks, you will see topclass from that time

Maybe I've just got odd taste but until I started collecting I never had a Santa Cruz deck and only ever had 1 powell an early 31x10 team deck which I rapidly swapped for a sims andrect.in the mid to late80,s I went for schimitt alva and Deathbox. |

Good argument this one!! Can there really be a Winner!!? All down to personal preference!! First Pro Board I got was a Jessee Mermaid, Baddest graphics on a board ever!! Jim Philips rules!! I skated a lot of Santa Cruz boards quite simply cos they had some sweet graphics and the boards themselves gave you a good ride and they were solidly built. Well designed and constructed. The O'Brien Reaper, the Kendalls, Grossos, all great boards. Thing is, I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I always thought Powell boards had this Mystique about them, cos of the Bones Brigade, and also errrrrm, cos my Local Skateshop used to Bloody charge more money for a Powell Board!! Don't know why!! The design and construction was always shoddier, there was no real concave, and they did'nt have much kick tail or anything. I'm not talking about 90s Powell here. To be honest they always F**King charged more for Vision boards too, eventhough those were built like shit!! I'll never understand it. Even back then though, the Powells always just seemed like Classics, they had some sweet graphics, and the graphics would'nt really change much, u knew who's board was who's! plus like I said they were placed in a higher price category to the others. That always helps build the lust factor. Always been more partial to Santa Cruz myself, but what turned me to Powell was the Ray Barbee Rag Doll! Still skate it!! My favourite board of all!! Large, flat, awkward looking piece of shit, but it really performs!! Amazing, does'nt look like a great board but it is...Heck, maybe it's just the way I skate, all fucked up, but that thing is the best ride!! I achieved Greatness on that board!! Errrrrm, well, Neighbourhood greatness anyway!! No complys!! Much later got a Powell Welinder Nordic Sperm double Kick and that is a really great board too!! It just feels good under your feet. Always wanted to skate the Guerrero Flaming Daggers board, anyone recommend it? He certainly seemed to rip street on it! Hmmmmmmmm, it's a pretty close one, but I would have to say that Santa Cruz takes the Belt, by a close points decision! Sorry but the Jessee and the Grosso Devil edge it over anything Powell got to offer!! But...Powells are pretty great too. Damn, becoming pretty indecisive, Shit, might start growing breasts and become a girl!! Doh!! But hey why leave it at that, Santa Cruz or Powell?? Comeon, G&S made some great boards, so did H-Street, Skull Skates, Circle A, Alva, etc. The Reategui warrior is a great ride. One of my mates was well into his Zorlacs, I though they were weird! His favourite was the Abrook model and that had like crazy Foot Swallowing concave, boy, was it deep!! And a way out steep kicktail, kid would have to cruise around with his knee real bent!! Ha! Ha! 90 degree kicktail!! Riding one always used to feel so different to other boards, and thats whats great about them! They're nice decks, quite collectible too now as well, I gather! All in all I would have to say ALL(nearly all) Old School Boards pretty much rule!! Damn, I just wish there were'nt like 50 Cab Dragons to every Dogtown or Skull Skates board on Ebay!! Incidentally, man, it's nice that some of you Old Schoolers and Skate Punks became all respectable and got such well paid jobs, cos Boy, people be really pushing up some of the prices!! Ha! Ha! Damn!! Got to get me a well paid job!! Still a BIG FAT ZERO on Ebay!! Ha! Ha! By the way, semi-seriously, (in case anyone wants to lay into me!) I work for the largest Manufacturer of Pharmaceutical and Herbal Supplements in the UK, so if anyone wants to trade boards for Drugs, give me a shout!! Ha! Ha! Got it all Man! Natural Anti-depressants, Pain relief, joint problems, Anti-oxidants, PMT relief for the little lady, Vitamins, Health foods.....and for those of you that still thinks Tony Alva rocks!! Something to keep your Dick hard!! Ha!! Ha!! All legit, good Shit!!
Peace |

The early 80's Santa Cruz graphics (R/S concave, the Peters, The Street Sk8 The Jammer, the Olson, the Bevel) had nothing on the Powells between 80-85,(Cab,Cab cutaway,Hawk,MiniCab,Ollie,SkullSword). By the late 80's, the Powell's werent as hot, they recycled the same graphics, the decks were weak and Santa Cruz decks shapes were better.
The Alva's blew them all away by 1987. |
