I think i posted this once before, I'm trying to restore the tail to an old Danny Way "animals" H-street deck, which has had at least 2 inches worn off of one of the corners, and about an inch off the other side. Any advice on how i could successfully shape it back to where it should be? And if i use spackling compound, would this be strong enough to skate, or should i just hang it?
thanks in advance,
mike |

I've always used spackling compound, but I think I may try Olivelawn's magical junk (I forget what it is, you can find it in his article on AoS I think, or just email him) for the next deck I do.
You will most definitely not be able to skate a deck that was reshaped with spackling compound. In fact, on a Hosoi Hammerhead, I had it resting bottom up on my workshop table, and because the entire weight of the deck was supported by two little spackled parts at the nose, and two little spackled parts at the tail, one of the tail sides collapsed.
Not very sturdy stuff. Treat it gingerly.

I usually like to have a mint or lightly used version of the deck I'm restoring to work from, both to get the shape right, and so I don't have to make guesses on the graphics. I then trade it for a mint or lightly used one of whatever I'm working on next, and so on.
The whole grid thing on the Hosoi is just because I was having a hell of a time getting both sides to be symmetrical, so I put up a little grid so that I'd be able to keep both sides even. That deck was a goddamn nightmare to restore. I'd discourage anyone from ever tackling a Hammerhead, or the Hammerhead either, for that matter...
If you don't have a model to work from, maybe you could get someone to trace one for you so you'll have a template for the shape. A full sized, full color photocopy would be even better.
It can be hard to get photocopies sometimes, I think that when you just post an open plea, a lot of people just assume that someone else will get it to you. My advice is to find someone who you know has the deck you need, and ask them individually. Four full sized, full color copies (top half of graphic, bottom half of graphic, tail graphic, and top graphic) and a big padded envelope and postage will cost about $7 or $8 (plus it's a pain in the ass to take a deck off the wall and drag it in to Kinko's), so be sure to cover their expenses and make it worth their while if they'll allow you to... |

I've already started a little bit with the spackling, but i'm having a bit of trouble keeping it in place while i layer it on, is there any way i could just make a stencil or template sticking out from the board to both hold it in place and let me know how far to go out?
also, is there any substance i could use to make it strong enough to skate? |

I'd guess that perhaps you're using too much at once. You have to build it up gradually over several sessions, giving it time to dry in between. I generally don't mess with a deck for at least 24 hours if I can help it.
One way that I've used to kind of keep the form is some sort of papery tape stuff, I'm not a real carpenter type, so I don't know the proper, technical term for it, but I'm pretty sure that it's near the spackling compound and putty knives, spreaders, etc., at Lowe's or Menard's. It's very fibrous, about an inch and a half or two inches wide, and has a crease running down the center of the roll, so when you rip off a strip, you can fold it at a 90 degree angle, right down the middle, for as long as a length as you tore off. It isn't an adhesive sort of tape, so once the compound is dry, the fibrousness of it makes it very easy to peel off.
I have no idea what the accepted purpose of this stuff is, but I suspect it may have something to do with corners???
Perhaps someone who knows something about this stuff may be able to help if I'm still not being clear enough about whatever it is.
Anyway, I take this tape stuff, tear off a five or six inch length of it, and fold it so that there's a 90 degree angle in it, and then keep one "half" of the tape flush with either the top or the bottom of the deck (regardless of which it is with respect to the deck, it should be the "down" side of the deck as you work on it), and sort of angle it out, and then spackle in the void between the deck and the little tape retaining wall. Once it hardens, you can sand it down to the appropriate shape.
I am not aware of any product that will make the deck rideable, but perhaps Olivelawn's miracle crap may. I think I recall him mentioning that it was at least strong enough to stand on briefly, which is a lot more mileage than you'd get out of standing on the spackling compound...
You getting all this, Amorone? |

I'll probably end up just making this one a hanger then, i'm also working on some visions, i have no idea what models they are, they appear to have been stripped and covered with stickers, but there's more than enough tail left to skate em when i'm done. Gonna make some more fake Mike Callahan pro models out of em i think.
If you can think of anymore tips on shaping it, i'd appreciate all the help i can get. |

Now i'll just need to find a high res scan of the animals deck. |

I'd recommend looking for a full sized photocopy (you can tape the sheets together) first, and then settling on a scan if you strike out.
I can't think of any more tips off the top of my head that aren't posted in the resto section on AoS, but feel free to fire away with any questions... |

will do, all i was really concerned with was how to get the shape of the tail going, and what sort of methods i should use. How long did it take you to do that tail on the hammerhead, by the way? |
