Anyone ever do a beer bottle cap mosaic?

I've got bags of caps and an idea.

I've done a couple of experiments and done a bit of web research, would like to pick the brains of those that may have done it.

Thanks,
Mike

I've never done one, but it sounds cool and if anyone can pull it off...it's you!! Good luck and have fun!

Peace,

Here's what I wanna do...

I've got an Afroman Big Worm (it's like 12" X 60"), a Star bottle opener, an a whole bunch of caps. I want to build it as a complete, but make it a wall hanger...The Beer Cruzer

The Trucks have no bushings in them btw.

I'll bolt the trucks down as per normal and bolt the bottle opener on too. Probably counter sink the back side so it can hang on the wall nice and flat (it's not, nor will it be, gripped).

Looks like a good ol' hot glue gun will work pretty good to attach the caps...then I'm thinking a sand less (to avoid scuffing the caps) grout to fill the gaps.

The problem/question is how to grout around the trucks & opener? Also the edges?

Ideas welcome.

Think I'll hang a bucket off the bottom/back truck for catching more caps.

Grout seems to be a little overkill but here's and easy way to do it.

You could use an old set of risers as a template for the trucks, or make a template out of a scrap piece of wood -
also make a template for the bottle opener.

Maybe don't do the grout so thick near the templates so they're easy to pull off without cracking grout..

Or you could hire a Mexican to do it, that would probably be the easiest grout job he ever had

Yeah...the grout may be overkill, but overkill is what I want.

I spent some time thinking about it, and I agree...Risers! Duh. Figure I'll trace the opener on something of equal thickness and bust out my ol' pal jigsaw...and make a riser for that too.

As to the edging, I'm gonna temporarily staple some laminate around the edge of the deck and use that as a "frame"...pop it off when the grout dries.

My wife does tile mosiacs...and I'm her grout foreman.

A Mexican would be overkill for this job.

I have been wanting to do one of these too. Not enough time for all my wack ideas though. At least it is a good excuse to keep buying different varieties of beer to expand my pallet of colors, and my pallate of taste.

Well...that did have something to do with it too. That and I just wanted an obscenely large bottle opener.

Not sure what that means...but I'm pretty sure the answer is no.

Okey dokey...

Got some work done.

Gonna use risers to raise the trucks and opener away from the "capped" surface.

Made a custom opener riser out of a cheap cutting board. The Dremel is your friend...

Got it roughed out...

Practiced gluing down caps using some crappy caps (how did those get in there?)

See how far these take me, might have to put some more work in on this part

Thanks to those that have offered up caps. 'ppreciate it. Don't know if this is a one off project or not, but my twisted artistic integrity says I have to be "responsible" for my own supplies.
