Here's some of the stuff your $$'s pay for on these here internets:
Virtual Private Server:
Guaranteed 1/16 of a quadcore, quad CPU server (e.g. 1 CPU guaranteed, burstable to 16)
3 GB of dedicated RAM + 1GB burst RAM
We can buy more resources if necessary... right now we are good but traffic spikes could slow us down. More RAM = more spare server processes = lower latency = quicker response.
The only sites that get significant traffic on this VPS server are SnB, Skatepark.org, and Skatopia.org -- a pretty worthy bunch of sites, eh? Yes, they pay hosting fees as well... but they are lightweights compared to the resources used by SnB. The others occasionally get a lot of traffic, but SnB has sustained traffic 24/7/365. We have over 3000 regular users per month, most of whom visit several times per month, many of whom visit daily, and some who are always on.
Costs
Our costs went up last week because my partners and I formerly had a sweetheart deal to host a rack of dedicated servers in a Network Operations Center in TN. The skateserver was one of those, a dual core 4GB box. We traded sysadmin and web design work for that deal. The deal is over, thanks to new management at the NOC. We had to quickly move to the current setup because hosting for the dedicated servers was going to cost 10x what we are paying for VPS servers. In short, we were spoiled for a few years while we flew under the radar (we also ran a high traffic independent music torrent server -indietorrents.com- in that NOC. indietorrents is still down and may not come back, skatepark.org was down for 2 days, skatopia for 3).
Stitch & Bitch
This last week was rough because I had to quickly setup 2 VPS web servers, transfer hundreds of sites, get them running, tweak settings to maintain service, and deal with clients who were not so happy about their email going slow for a few days this week. I have been working 18 hour days since the move.
OK, enough about that Everything is stable now, so I'm tuning and balancing the server. If your connection gets dropped, or slow, it's likely because I'm running a test or restarting a service.
Here's some info about the SnB setup:
SnB has 100MB RAM dedicated to PHP & MySQL database object cache (that's a lot). SnB has priority for Apache server processes, with a minimum of 5 spare server processes. SnB uses 20-40% of system resources and CPU at peak times. Imagine how many peeps are subscribed to some of the popular threads here, and that's how many email notifications get fired off every time somebody replies. That takes a lot of horsepower.
SnB hard disk space - 3.68 GB
MySQL database storage - 2.60 GB
Other stuff:
Domain registration for SnB & hosting server
Secure certificate for the hosting server
Postini email spam filtering for the admin account
On-call sysadmin (me).
On-call moderators
The Future --- ooooo--woooooo
We are in beta testing with a totally updated forum software that has better hooks for RAM caching of MySQL and PHP. It is much faster than the current software, especially when it is under load. It looks the same, but has more features to help us moderate topics, ban fucktards and maintain a functional forum. It has some new features for members as well. If you are interested in learning more about it: phpbb.com
When I say beta testing, I mean live testing on a working site. It will be ready to go very, very soon. It would probably be running right now if it were not for the extra work during the move. |

The RAMpires are out sucking the juice out of some donor servers right now. They will return to the crypt quite soon. This means more Skulls and Bones for you. And less complaining, we hope. Or else.

Someone match that or beat it.
I dare you.
Keyser Soze just kicked everyone's ass. But thanks to all of you. This shit is draining the coffers at a way too uncomfortable rate. |
