to me, as a designer, I see the benefit of either process. It's like the argument between Kinkos and Printing Presses. They both have their advantages/disadvantages.
Heat transfer
Pros: Does the best full-color photographic type images. It's easier to setup and change. And is good for limited runs.
Cons: Equipment to do it is expensive. Not likely for a home do-it-yourselfer.
Silk screen
Pros: Has better quality. Looks cleaner. Lasts longer. More durable. You can print a wider gamut of inks. More vibrant. You can do it yourself in your basement/garage for not much $$.
Cons: Harder to setup the files (art) than Heat Transfer. Hard to learn the technique and secrets of the whole process.
I think the industry has gone to heat transfer because it's easier for the designers to do full color art. And setup for the art is nearly nothing. ANd for how fast companies change graphics, it probalby benefits them to have a way to change it up over night. |

| what ink do you guys use to silk screen boards? water based or oil because im having some problems doing them myself. Also mesh count? Thanks |

| Something close to heat transfer can be done cheaply, the 'iron on' this that and the other, but thats for clothing. |

yup... its true... the first run of our boards were heat transfer and I have one more open order with heat transfer since its a photograph of a graffiti piece on a wall... once that is completed I am vertically integrating all our runs and going to screen them myself... I hate hate hate heat transfer and it has bugged the shit out of me from day one that we ran 2 of our 4 decks this year with heat transfer... all our 2010 decks will be screened... |
