I saw the idea to use a plastic storage container as the box part of a lightbox on instructables.com, and thought the idea was brilliant. So I made my own, and took it a little further.
If you need a lightbox, this is a cheap and easy way to make one.
My new lightbox.
Cost:
About $40
Time:
About 1 hour.
Ingredients:
1 - frosted (clear-ish) plastic storage box. $4.74 at Wal-Mart.
2 - 13" fluorescent light fixtures (can be daisy chained) $8.88 each.
3 - Some way to attach the lights to the inside of the lid. I used some screws and wood scraps.
1 - piece of acrylic for the drawing surface (mine is 20"X14") $14.20
1 - roll of reflective duct tape (the shiny kind) $2.99
4 - bolts/washers/nuts to attach surface to box.
Tools:
Drill
Screwdriver
Here's my box
Here's some of the other stuff.
This is what I used to attach the lights to the inside of the lid.
Both lights attached, and daisy-chained (1 plug instead of two). I also put some of the shiny tape on the lid.
I lined the inside of the box with the reflective tape. I don't know if it makes anything brighter, but it keeps the light from coming out of the side, and keeping my wife awake if I want to use it in bed (it's not very heavy).
My piece of acrylic for the surface from TAP plastics
Attached the surface to the box.
I put little rubber feet on the bottom (which is the lid), to keep it from sliding on my drawing table.
You can see the cord coming out, but what you can't see is the little notch I cut in the bin to allow to cord to pass through.
And it's done. My tape job sucks, and I haven't drilled any air holes in it to help keep it cool, but I didn't notice any heat when using it

This photo is without the flash. It was really light in the room (about 5pm), but the box is so bright it's all the light that showed up without the flash.
This thing is really simple to make, and works perfectly. I'm stoked.
$40 bucks is pretty damn good for a light box with a 20" X 14" surface.
This one at dick blick that is a little bit biger costs $350

That's awesome!! One question though... why does the storage box have to be "frosted"? Wouldn't clear be that much better?... or would you see into the box and have a hard time just tracing your stuff you wanted to trace? |

frosted gives a more even light source. My buddy made one for me out of wood. its got incandescent bulbs so it gets hella hot. |

Yeah, If it were clear, the bulbs would be visible, and the light would be focused instead of evenly spread out. |

Three. It would have gone a bit faster without the beer, but it was 98 degrees inside my house. I should have listed beer as one of the ingredients...it was critical. |
