My mother-in-law came out of the kitchen last weekend with a concoction of root vegetables, parmesian cheese and bacon bits. It tasted like what farts smell like. Instead of dumping it on her head I pretended to like it. Even had seconds.

I deserve a medal.

One time when I was in high school or so, my mom made us chili for dinner. Upon digging in, my dad, ~6 year old brother and I all noticed that something was amiss. This was not her usual chili recipe.

There was no ground beef in it.

There were very finely chopped (Cuisinarted?) carrots in it instead. It was fucking terrible. Just awful. I realize that part of the disgustitude was likely the expectation of something known, constant, and good, only to be betrayed and hoodwinked with a crummy simulacrum, but it was a bad dinner experience all around.

She insisted that it was the usual recipe, and that we were all mistaken. I don't think she liked it either, but in order to make us seem foolish she ate it like it was normal. My dad went out and picked up fast food for the rest of us.

Sounds like both your mom's where given Crocpots. That alone made the worst part of the 70's just unlivable.

Wrong on several levels.

My mother's chili was not prepared using the Crock-Pot, (nor was this pseudo-chili abomination) nor is there anything bad that can reasonably be said about the Crock-Pot (aside from the fact that they're heavy). Any food you make with it will likely be delicious.

like 10 years ago we were having a family reunion at my gram's house, she comes out with this 3 tier green jello mold, looked good...

upon further examination the top layer had little red things which I assumed were strawberrys chopped up,

the middle layer had a bunch of green stuff chopped up which I assumed was some kind of melon,

the bottom layer had this weird looking brown stuff so I asked my gram what it was, she replys "taco meat"

come to find out the top layer was cut up tomato's not strawberrys, the middle layer was chopped lettuce not melon,....... needless to say I did not partake in the taco green jello mold, thats when I started to realize my gram's losing her shit............

That's awesome! I'll have to make this for the next pot luck, for shock value alone.
