how much should one charge a person or, in this case a band, for a graphic that i put together? i mean i'm not a pro graphic designer but it's something that i want to get into. so far i've got a couple bands that want me to come up with graphics for them.

my cousin has 'hired' me to create some designs for t shirts. i came up with this one and now he wants me to print it. any ideas what would be reasonable to charge him? he is family so he'd get a little discount.

here it is...

it looks a lot better in corel draw.

while i'm at it, here's a link to their music if you want to check it out. http://www.myspace.com/thebrightred check out You Put The Sweet In Sixteen.

i think pro graphic designers make $40 - $50 an hour around here. For family i would make it worth your while but not charge to little. once you do they always think they can do it for that cheap no matter how much detail and time it took. i learned from personal experience

that is a really nice design. i like it!!

$100, and you sign an artwork release so they can use the design for whatever.

or, maybe

$60, with no release so they need to 're-buy' the design if they want to use it on anything else, or if they print more then X amount of shirts you get a royalty.

I have had lots and lots of problems with bands over the same issue. They seem to think that graphic artists should give away their work for the oppertunity to work for a band. It's all crap and just a way of dicking artists out of the money they deserve . . . . I like working for bands, but they are way, way, way more greedy and money oriented then 99% of my corporate clients.

i know hired artists make an hourly or whatever, but from the get-go you need to quote a finalized price. WHats to stop someone from charging only 10bucks an hour but taking 100 hours to do the job when someone charging 50bucks could do it in 10 hours?

The reality is that you give a quote based on the outline for work you make, and you hope you are chosen. Don't work for friends or family unless you like doing charity, or you have most of the money up front.

edit: i do graphic design for a living. it's a frustrating business in all, but fun some of the times (which makes it worth it to me)

Fools Gold- do you have the verbage for the rights-release thing and the limited-useage agreement?

I've been kicking myself in the ass over a design I did a while back that has been floating the clients company for years. I only got $100 for it originaly and the dudes been reprinting it, and printing it on all kinds of different stuff. I wish I would have had a tighter legal agreement.

Not really, technically you can write it yourself and have them sign it, but if it comes down to a legal case it might not hold up that well in front of a judge. That's what I do with bands, or discuss it over email and keep those. Otherwise I explain it to them at the shop infront of another few people and if they fuck up, bango witnesses. Contracts are contracts, BUT stuff can get messy if it comes down to lawyers and whatnot (lawyers are a sneeky bunch) Remember that if you agree to something, technically it's a verbal contract and could be enforced (witnesses are key here)

I did art for a few bands over a three or four year period with no contracts. Eventually one of the bands broke up, the other got significantly bigger (regionally at least) and continued to use my art. Not a huge deal except they pulled some silly mafia type extortion crap with my 'we will take our work elsewhere unless you agree to our demands, if you know what's good for you and your business you will listen to us. If you don't we will sink you" (demands included a 75% discount on all merch, with a 1 day turnaround time?!?) Sure enough they are still using my art, making a fecking mint off it (400% markup on their shirts) and giving me nothing cause I had no contract. Should have sued them, but didn't. Tactical error on my part.

Get what the market will bear. It's hard to get a fair price if your doing the soliciting. I've been in the same boat as you many times, seems the interesting work never pays. Peep some of the stuff I've done at MySpace: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?...friendid=49607759

I charge 100 hr though my scope is narrow and niche in the market.
I would charge $25-50hr depending on time to a family member.
And for sure hit them up for favors since you are doing one for them... the street goes both ways.

As for the band I might charge him more cause the singer is whiney and painful to listen to.
sorry if your cousin is the singer.
I FUCKIN LOVE THE MUSIC... thats tough.
singer blew it for the band. big time.
the thing that killed it for me was the song i remember full house.
TOUGH ASS GUITAR AND DRUMMING leading into it...
gets you going "yeah, oh yeah" and almost wanting to break things
and then you have nasal boy come in and kill the shit
by singing about danny joey and the olsen twins??
WTF?
lack of things to write aboooot in canada I guess?
Anyway the band is ROCKIN. just need to ditch the singer.
but what do i know? our band has been auditioning singers for the past 4-6 months...
