Just got back from my trip out west. Had a blast and ate some rad food. Here's a little review.
Gordo Burrito (Berkeley): Always stellar. I dream about these burritos. There's tons of rad burrito shops in the Bay Area, but, this one is my favorite. Large Carne Asada w/ black beans, rice, sour cream and extra salsa verde please!
Zachary's Pizza (Oakland): This is another "must have" when I'm out there. Fucking great pizza. I like the fact that when you order garlic as a topping, it seriously comes as a topping. Just heaping it on. Also, it's real chopped garlic, too. Not that minced shit that comes outta the jar. They do slices too, for lunch, which is rad.
Le Cheval (Oakland): Rad Vietnamese food. I highly reccomend the chicken and green beans in a garlic sauce. The cold noodle bowl with shrimp was damn tasty. They have snake wine there. I was too sober (re: chicken) to give it a go.
Big Sky (San Luis Obispo): They had good salads and nice, healthy options on the menu. I had a great grilled chicken salad with pinto beans, bacon and feta cheese with a buttermilk spinach dressing. Liz had a smoked salmon club that was killer. I like the fact that they use baby mixed greens on thier sandwiches. There was a film festival happening while we were there, and I saw the creepy, bearded clown-dad from The Devil's Rejects in the restaurant. I felt like asking him for my 2 hours back. I fucking hate that movie. D-U-M-B.
Pelly's (Carlsbad) Cool seafood market/small dining room. Really basic menu: Super-fresh fish with salad and rice. I had the grilled Mahi-Mahi. So good. Plus, I grabbed a bag of Have'a chips there as well. The best tortilla chips in the world.
Thanks for the good food, California! |

I've been so hungover that I've had to sit down to pee. I've also been so hungover that I actually cried. |

zachary's is good chicago style pizza but i think it's over rated. its reputation precedes itself. i'm not trying to diss you but i've had friends from out of state that would say" i've heard we've got to hit up zackary while we're in berkeley. and i'd be thinking to myself "it's just chicago style pizza". and i can usually talk them out of it. but the best food in cali is all the mexican places. i eat that shit 3-4 times a day. don't forget to pack your rolaids. the zackary's your talking about is right on the berkeley-oakland boarder, i lived in oakland for 2 years and i always thought that was in berkeley because it's on that side of the highway. |

Yeah, that's the one. Also, what you have to understand is that there is not one single pizza place in Birmingham that gets me excited. There are a few that are good, don't get me wrong, but, none you'd ever walk away from stoked. Not any really good Italian places to be perfectly honest. It's all kind of just middle-of-the-road type stuff.
We do, however, have excellent Mexican, Thai, Indian and Mediterranian places that more than make up for the lack of Italian joints. |

Good thread zodes - I was in SoCal briefly last month, ate @ Pink's in W Hollywood, tasty chili dogs & onion rings --- Neptune's Net, up the PCH past Malibu at the Ventura County line - some good fried shrimp/fish and steak fries. the rest of my meals were @ coffee shops/events and were just about average.
I had a KILLER patty melt around midnight this past Sat. in Atlanta @ the midtown location of The Vortex. Oh, and tater tots...mmmmm.
@GoB - remind us what your dad says about pizza --- classic. |

"Pizza's like pussy.
Even the worst I've ever had was still pretty damn good." |

i have come to realize that most pizza in CA is bunk (i got spoiled on the NYC/NJ fare growing up)...
Zachary's is so-so... the best pizza on the west coast is Amici's (two in San Fran, one down in San Mateo).
since my transplanting, my new favs are Vietmanese and Korean BBQ... good good, wild wild stuff. |
