I have heard all the rave reviews abut Powell Swiss and Rockin Ron's..
I hate to admit it but even after skating almost 20 years, I've never rode ceramics.
How much maintenance is involved in owning them? How often do they have to be cleaned/re-lubed? Are they difficult to clean? Do they last a long time?
Sorry to seem sophmoric just looking for some feedback.
Also, can you find them used (cash is mad tight right now)?
Cheers.

They need to be cleaned every couple months depending on what/where you're riding. Just don't get them wet.
Cleaning a lubing is not difficult. Rockets come with specific directions and replacement shields should you accidentally damage ALL OF THEM (never happen).
I've been riding the Rockin' Rons' Rockets ceramic prototypes for... damn... must be near two years now. They still out perform every other bearing on the market. I have two other sets and several sets of Rocket steels in my quiver. No competition out there at all.
Used? I doubt it. Once on them, people tend to stay on them--especially with their bullet proof warrantee that you'll never see another company match. |

Are they good for heavy-duty use too? Big drops and stuff?
Would street kids really notice a difference? |

If you're asking if they can blow out, the answer is yes. All bearings stressed beyond their limit will blow out. Rockets have a replacement warrantee that no other bearing has.
Will street skaters notice? Yes. Rockets, although designed specifically for vert, get up to speed faster than any other bearing. So if you have a short runway for a rail you want to hit, Rockets may well give you the speed you need. |

Cool - A lot of kids ask if it's worth it to spend the money for street riding. And considering they go thru bearings almost as fast as decks, they dont want to spend extra for anything. |

i have several sets of the powell swiss ceramics, which i use for downhill, slalom and vert/park.
ceramic bearings can suffer under street skating conditions. the ceramic (actually silicon nitride) balls are so much harder than the steel race they sit in that heavy impacts can cause the ball to dent the race, resulting in everlasting bearing rumble.
like any high performance equipment, they do need looking after. however they are very quick, although a little expensive. finding them used is extremely unlikely. |

If they are riding rails and can't turn their board and land properly (classic bearing blow-out situation) then they might not be ready for a great bearing. If they're landing them properly, then Rockets are a serious consideration. |
