A wrote a POS/inventory system for a friends record store. Made a File Maker Pro front end and a MySQL backend. Works great.. Do you know any geeks?
There are some open source projects for POS. Turbo cash is an open source QuickBooks. If you want more info ping me off list and I can help. Here are a couple of articles to peruse and maybe help...

im using action sports systems. great program targeted at skate shops/ parks. couldnt go wrong for the money and it is a breeze to use. also excellent service. talk to terri smith @ www.actionsportssystems.com and tell her i sent you. Jay from stomping grounds in ohio. |

We use retailICE.
I tried Quickbooks retail edition but it wasn't detailed enough for a POS.
Ok for accounting but no cash till feature or product tagging and upc.
retailICE has more than you'd need. I think it's $35.
