So I'm working on my new ride for pool and ramp skating and now I'm looking at wheels.

Bull Dog Skates has some hot looking retro conicals: Old School Retro Series Double Conical Wheel -

http://www.bulldogskates.com/wheels_retro.htm

They seem pretty cool.

Conicals seemed to make plenty of sense back in the 80's when they were introduced - but I have only seen these ones for sale now.

Do conicals make a real difference?

The wheels to seem pretty sweet but definitely on the expensive side - $38-70!!!

Do the retro skate companies figure their market is affluent 40 somethings?

If so they forgot to consider 40 somehtings often have kids and a mortgage!

Thanks!

BDS makes some of the best wheels I've ever ridden. the shogos are my current favorites but they stopped making the ones I really liked. They're a bit more expensive but they're HUGE so I can only assume that the extra expense is in the mold tooling and extra urethane. the 'ultrathane' and 'black death' wheels are made with more costly urethane, hence the higher price. I haven;t tried either of those but I hear they're worth it too.

The extra running surface makes em grip like gorilla snot but they're still fast and you can break em loose when you want to. pop a set of rockets in em and you're off to the races. A lot of people might disagree but I like the 92a shogos for ditches. They just feel right. IMO they're worth every penny.

Do conicals make a difference? Ha, couldn't tell ya. All I know is that when I'm skating larger terrain I put Shitbirds on and I go real fast and my wheels don't hangman on the coping.

Every wheel has its limitations. No one wheel will be perfect in every condition. Wheels are relatively cheap, so having a "quiver" of wheels is a smart thing.

We sell a LOT of Shitbird wheels. Same with Powell's Bowl Bombers (in the SPF formula). Both are excellent wheels, with very different profiles. I've skated both, and they do indeed haul ass. I'm not a huge fan of wheels with overly-large contact patches (for parks/bowls), but if you want some extra grip w/o losing too much speed, that's one way to get it. In that respect, the BDS wheels are quite similar to ABEC11's NoSkoolz.

If you want some good wheels, and don't want to drop a ton of dough, check out the deadstock Foundation wheels that I stock.

The new Black Death series that BDS has put out has the Shogos and the Dub cons in all black and a high duro.

I rode some the other day and they're fast as hell and grip like a mother!

Great for skating bowls!

IMHO, Go w/the NoSkoolz, they rock and are super grippy.

BDS Dub Cons are amazing. I set up ALL my pigs with 'em. If you're riding a wide, old shcool board, definitely kick down the bit of extra $ and you will be stoked. If you're riding a smaller, double kick setup, I suggest Shitbird's IPA Speed Formula.

Fast as fuck and grippy too.

Call me crazy but I think they came out in '78 or '79...
But they do make a difference both pro and con for some things.... pro for something you want the least resistance coming in and con for stuff you want locked on like 50-50s......
