i have illustrator 10 and i'm new to it. i was wondering if i scan a drawing of mine and load it into illustrator will i have to redraw the whole thing using the tools? or is there a function that can pick up the lines?
when i'm done my business administration course, i want to go into digital graphic design. but for now i'm trying to learn about photoshop and illustrator through trial and error. |

There is/was an application called Adobe Streamline that does that. It will automatically "trace" something you've scanned and turn it into vector art. For all I know, they've integrated this into Illustrator now but if not, I bet you can find Streamline out there. I probably have a version still and can give it a try if you'd like. You have to mess with it a bit still once it's traced it but it'll give you a good start. |

Streamline works pretty good, but if there's any detail you have to do a lot of work to 'clean it up'.
Illustrator has the "Auto-Trace" tool.
Search the Help file for "Trace" |

I'll have to give that autotrace a try. I figured they'd have integrated it into Illustrator by now. All the Adobe products are kind of converging and taking on functions of the others. I'm just stuck in my ways of using them how I have been since the mid 90s. Maybe I should read a manual or something! |
