First off I saw this auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI....m&item=1043618330
Seeing this got me to thinking.. What makes this board worth $182.49? (Well more than that I guess since it didn't hit the reserve..)
Besides the shape, there's nothing original about the deck, and the paint job is done wrong.. Why would you want it in your collection? I guess I could see buying it to ride but not at that price. I could see it if you got it right from Duane. But wouldn't you rather have it in the shape it was when he rode it.. And not repainted?
I realize both the bidder and seller post here and I'm not flaming either of you. Just trying to understand the thinking..
Now I see this auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI....m&item=1053031577
Restored eh? I've asked for better photos since you can't even see what the wheel wells look like.
I mean, I'd love to find an old Big Foot to restore, but I'd want to ride that sucker..
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Jeff.

Hi Jeff... well, speak'n for the guy who ended up with that dp deck (me), I can tell you why I was interested in em..
First of all DP has always been one of my favorite riders... That deck that slob-air/z-boy put up is a very rare DP deck with the routed out arial bars.(only one other person I know of that owns one right now)., although the refurb job isn't that great, it is still a DP underneath.. The other Hybrid that Slob-air had is really a cool creation with DP's sig on it..(is it an original Santa Cruz??? is it an original DP?? well, the way I see it, is it is an original Santa Cruz with DP's approval on it..)
I usually believe a deck should be left as it is, and not refurbed, but I have re-conciderd that idea lately... Now I think of old decks like old classic cars... doing a nice restore job bring it back to its natural glory...(although some should still be left alone)
Does it take away from value??? well I suppose just like collecting in general, it just depends on who wants to pay for it...I personally plan on re-doing the refurb job on that DP deck, and make it right...
As for the Bigfoot...I say go for it...but Im sure it will still break some big bucks if it is authentic....

Not everyone can afford original decks, some are impossible to find in any condition. If someone is willing to pay good money for a restored deck, it's probably because that deck has special meaning to them, and they are willing to accept it in its non-original condition.
Restored decks are cool, if they display well and you can get them for cheaper, why not? most restored decks I've seen on ebay do not command the same $ as originals.
I've done some minor touching up to some of my decks, some people might consider that desecration, but they look better and it's hardly noticeable. |

devilock, well said. and tastes are tastes- we all have our own regarding what we like to see in skateboards, for example. from utterly destroyed to "mint", it would seem there will be beauty to be found in all states of appearance, and for as many different reasons. |

If you only buy mint, then mint decks are what you collect. Remanufactured or refurbished have as much appeal to me because I'm not going to go out and ride them, but rather have them in MY Personal collection to admire.. It's having a little piece of my youth to admire and think back on.In some cases the deck is so rare you know you may never see another again. BTW that is NOT a BigFoot. The BigFoot is whopping 12" Wide. Right GRIME...HUGE. |

Obviously everyone draws their own line on this topic. I feel that "restoring" does not add value to a board, and may actually hurt it. Now, I'm not completely strict on this. If you want to use Goo Be Gone to remove sticker residue, that's gonna' make the board look better without taking anything away from the original state of the board. Sanding off the graphics and repainting it has gone too far! A board from the 70s, 80s, or even 90s now is an antique to me. They aren't making more of them and there are a few of us that enjoy collecting these bits from our childhood. I understand that everyone wants a mint Dogtown Bigfoot, or SC Duane Peters. Fact is, there aren't enough available out there for all of us. That's part of what makes collecting special. If everyone could get any board they wanted, what would the point be? I understand the temptation to take an old board and try to make it new again. Wouldn't it be great? Yeah, but that's not what you get. The Peters is a prime example. In my opinion (we're all entitled to one), this board was a better piece before the graphics were stripped. I understand that it looked a little rough, but it looked like a rare Duane Peters board. Now it's someone's failed experiment. It doesn't look like the board it was. I would have been much more interested in trading for it/buying it had it been left alone. It's a very rare board. Like George said, there's only a few still out there. What if everyone that had one still sanded and repainted it how they thought it would look good? I think that would be a shame, and I'd like to discourage what seems to be a growing trend. "Restoring" does not make an old board new. If the board is used, clean up some stickers. I don't even think touching up the paint is horrible, but DON'T try to recreate it. It won't work. It's great jst the way it is. |

Tim makes an interesting case and I must agree with his logic. If a board is a basket case though isn't it better to bring it back to life? |

I'd say if the board is pretty much shot, and isn't the rarest one out there (like maybe a beat to shit Skull and Sword) there's no real harm in turning it into a project. I've considered doing projects like that if I ever had the spare time.
I wouldn't have done it to the Peters. It wasn't that bad, and it unfortunately is quite rare. I'm not trying to pick on this one board, it just happens to be what we're talking about right now. I also understand that everyone looks at these things differently. I don't want to impose my will on everyone. I will, however, avoid these things when they show up for auction. So, if you're into this because you think it will make your board more valuable, speaking for myself I can say that it won't. If it's for your own collection, or it's what you like to do, I won't (or can't) stop you. |

I would buy this deck even if its a replica but everything has its price. I checked it against the 2 beamers on iceit.com and noticed it didnt have wood screws holding the beams on but an old add from skateboarder is what you need to be sure |
