Birmingham has neither a decent, independent beer & burger joint nor kick ass record/comics store. These are my two future options, as they are the only two things I know anything about. What to do???

That sucks. In Milwaukee we have a decent burger/beer joint...The Palamino..working class style, good jukebox, great food and not a trendy hipster place. Got a good comic store and a good independant record store. All withing walking/skating distance.

I don't mind trendy/hipster folks coming through the door, as long as they are spending money. Besides, Birmingham could actually use a few hip people hangin' around.

I'm not talking about shiny-shirt, cigars, man-sandals, trendy, either. Fuck them.

I'm talking about cute girls with glasses who drink Pabst. So what if they listen to emo. They attract guys who will eagerly buy them drinks in a futile attempt to get some action.

They also buy records.

i'm in the same boat. the only things i really have experience for are resturants and record stores. that being said i'd have to say go for the resturant. it probably wouldn't be as much fun as the record store, but i think it would have more of an oppurtunity to be profitable. also with a record store your kind of limiting your clientle from the get go. not everyone is into buying records/music, but everybody has to eat. start up costs for a resturant would probably be considerably higher though......restuarant equipment is not cheap and not to mention the liquor license. the record store would probably be easier to start and easier to run, but i've got to stick by my original answer....go for the resturant. people are EXTREMELY loyal to a good resturant!!!! end of my babbling

90% of all restaurants go under within the first 12 months.

Plus all good record stores are filthy, which you can't get away with when you're serving food.

Birmingham is a very restaurant-friendly town. People are always very excited when a new place opens. I've been working on this idea for a few years now & it is a seriously tough decision.

Do I want to play Tron & listen to the Melvins all day?
Do I want to serve kick ass burgers & chicken while drinking High Life?

Tough I tell ya!!!

I've been thinking about doing a store that has everything I like...

skateboards
vinyl and some CDs but mostly vinyl
independent comix

I never considered the restaurant angle, but it would be cool to have good eats too...

and beer

and coffee

and bongs

and...
