And rightly so. But Gibson's quality has slid while its prices have gone up and Epiphone has oddly been kicking ass in terms of quality recently. Gibson owns Epiphone so its very likely that Gibson approves of this.
CD was just plain outright ripping it off. |

I own a Gibson too. And I know what you mean. It is tempting though. I've seen but one of these Chibsons, a Les Paul, and it was every bit as good as the real thing.
That said, some of the Gibsons that hit the shops here last year were awful. Rough finishes and ugly stains... |

From what I read customs is seizing a lot of these and Gibson has publicly come out against counterfeits. I can't imagine Gibson approving this...at least not for sale in North America.

Gibson owns Epiphone, Epiphone is doing the Chibsons. It's their own company doing it.
My guess is this was a reaction by Gibson to other companies doing knockoffs. If they own the knockoffs of their own brand they can further squeeze out the companies ripping them off. |

Is there an online source that confirms that a Chinese Epiphone factory is making counterfeit Gibsons? |

Based only on the pics in that link to the Gibson article, these don't look to be built to Epiphone standards, let alone Gibson's. I don't know if the knock off they're showing is made by the same factory as the one from the first post. I have two Gibsons myself, a LP and an SG, but I can't drop 2k+ on what they've been putting out lately. If these at the least had Epi sound and quality, I'd buy a couple. As it is they're about half the price of the Epiphone version of what they are ripping off. |

The fact is everyone is importing and they're being made throughout Asia. Eastwood turns out $1000+ Chinese items, etc. Gretsch? Latest I was looking at is a Steel Dobro company Republic...in the hands of many "players" - and Made In China...just a final clean up and set up.
I found many suppliers and for probably $300 bucks each I could do a run with my own logo...straight steel guitar. Choice of wood for the neck, etc.
There's no reason the product shouldn't be just fine. Maybe swap out pick ups, but hell, it's the same wood. It's all CNC. I would only question the finishes. So just call these guys:

Thousands of dollar Custom guitars are on the move up - rips on Fenders or other...all CNC.
Pay $8K for a TK Smith 100% hand made...otherwise, why not. I've been looking at this page for awhile:

I was digging this- and customize the inlay for $30:

I have many friends that have bought the Les Pauls - no problems at all. Not sure of the logo? |

I can see buying a nice copy but why buy a counterfeit? Is the goal to fool people into thinking you have a real Gibson?

Sure, why not... I think the "custom" relic $3k+ Fender rip offs are just as bad and they're everywhere...and counterfit.
I don't like Counterfit, I do think they should say something else, but even some well known US Made rips were putting Fender on their shit. |
