City identifies proposed sites for future skateboard facilities in Calgary
By Dave Dormer,Calgary Sun

Skateboarders in Calgary could soon have more places to ply their sport as the city has identified 10 proposed sites for new parks.

City officials will spend the next few days finalizing the list, said Greg Dycke, superintendent of sport development recreation, with construction hopefully getting underway in July and wrapping up by fall.

“The quick wins, we’re going to do this year and hopefully by the end of the summer we’ll have some in the ground,” he said.

The proposed sites include John Laurie Park in Edgemont, the New Brighton Recreation Centre, Quarry Community Centre, Deer Run Community Centre, Applewood Park, Midsun Community Centre, Huntington Hills, Southwood, Henry Wisewood High School and Our Lady of Assumption school in Bowness.

Three open houses were held to garner community feedback on the sites, drawing about 300 people each, and Dycke said another 395 online submissions were received.

“Doing the open houses and doing this engagement, it stirs up a lot of feedback,” said Dycke.

“We’re just doing the final checks.”

The proposed parks are divided into three categories, a skate spot — about the size of half a basketball court; a neighbourhood skatepark — about the size of a tennis court; and a community skatepark — about the size of a hockey rink.

“I’m leaning toward doing neighbourhood (skateparks) for most of them,” said Dycke.

“It seems to be the happy medium.”

The work is part of the city’s Skateboard Amenities Strategy, which said the number of skateboarders in the city calls for up to 50 new parks over the next 10 years.

“That is the ideal state, if you will,” said Dycke.

“The Skateboarding Amenities Strategy, which was released in 2011, identified 50 as what’s needed to hit that ideal,” said Dycke.

“But that’s not necessarily what council is committed to doing or what we’re commited to doing, we’re saying ‘that’s the gold standard, let’s start building stuff and see where we can get.’”

The city has budgeted $4 million toward the projects so far, and Dycke said more funding will be needed.

“We’re hoping to get that spent by the end of 2015,” said Dycke.

“That’s the stop point of our budget then we’ll have to go back to council.”

Along with rails and ramps, the new skateparks will have an artistic component as the city is finalizing a shortlist of artists for the project, which will have a budget of $30,000.
