We were talking a brawl -- and you're right, the Bones Brigade would quickly be reduced to, well, broken bones, blood and shredded camoflage. But, a pool session in the jam format with it being one massive snake session would work just as well too.

And yah, sure, Hawk can pull some amazing shit in a half-pipe, but put the geek in a pool and he just doesn't cut it. Cab, however, can still shred pools with the best... but still, I think the Boned Brigade would get stomped. Peters and Olson still shred. Orton is still Mr. Fearless, SALBA & MALBA still rip...

It'd make a better show than the X-Games

Yeah but slob-air you are forgeting about the pool rider who still wins almost every comp he enters, the one and only Lance Mountain. I have gone to the Vans Skatepark out here in Ontario and instead of skating like I paid to do I had to stop and just watch the master at work.

You are also forgeting Mike McGill.I would take Lance and Mike in a pool comp over any of the riders you listed.

spyhill, I was not meaning to say that VC Johnson was the originator of all graphics. I was just saying in comparison between him and Jim Phillips, Johnson had the early edge. I remember an interview that Jim Phillips did where he acknowledged that VC Johnsons artwork forced him to push himself, and that is what led to the most famous Santa Cruz graphic, the screaming hand.

It sounded like you said all companies owed a debt to him. I'm sure that Jim and others were influenced by VCJ's work. It kicked ass. I'm not sure I've read the same interview you mention. I have read something similar where JP said that Santa Cruz sorta tied his hands, in that they didn't want him to do anything with skulls on it. He had to produce graphics that would appeal to the skateboard market (teenage boys) without skull/skeleton imagery. Think about all the other companies. Many (Dogtown, Skull Skates, Vision, Brand-X, etc.) had awesome skeleton imagery. Not Santa Cruz, but the art still rocked!

The brawl and the legit skate competition are two different things. Santa Cruz wins the street fight, but the Bones clones win the pool comp. Maybe if Christ Hosoi was in the SC camp they'd fair better...

Pool comp? Brigade winning? I'm not so sure about that one...Mountain and Cab surely would put up one helluva fight, but S.C. would take them by sheer numbers: Peters, Olsen, Salba, Malba, Meek, Boyle, Dressen (yes, he can rip a pool), Jessee, etc. Now a freestyle comp would be an altogether different situation!
As far as Jim Phillips getting shafted during contract negotiations with N.H.S., I'd have to say that both he and the company both fell victim to the late 80's/early 90's revolution. Skateboarding changed, but he and Novak didn't. Just like good old Mr. Blender once said, "It's the nineties, boys. Let's get rid of the skeletons."

CASTER, CASTER, CASTER, CASTER....Im with slob, and Henric... Besides CASTER, Santa cruz had the best decks....just look at the names for instance....

Santa Cruz:
Steve Olson (Bulky) Duane Peters: The Master of Disaster, Steve Alba (Lord Salba, or if you really wanna go back Le Machine")

Powell:
Ray (Bones), Allan (Ollie), hmmm cant rememer any nick names for Cab, Smith, or Hawk, all I know is Cab prob stood about 3' tall on his deck, Hawk probably weighed in at about 50lbs fully geared and holding Cab on his shoulders...

So I gotta go with Santa Cruz....besides they are the ones who brought punk into the skate scene....Go Diagnal Stipes and Checkered decks....

I hear that bowlrider!

In a sense, "Cab" was Caballero's nick. You also forgot to mention Santa Cruz team rider George "Wildman" Orton.

As for Hawk, I met him at a contest in Vancouver back in '79/'80. At the time I gave him the nickname "No-style".

Yea, thats funny slob... I along with a few other oldschool cohorts have had the same discussion....

T-hawk is a very good trickster...and a great skater, excellent competitor... but I would never classify him as having much style...
