yep. you'll want the blade to just barely cut through the ply. that way the blade won't buckle or bind as you're cutting the curvature of the radius. (less resistance)
the 'base-plate' of the circular saw helps to keep your blade stable while you cut. And since there is more blade cutting the wood with a circular saw over a saber saw, you have more control over making a precise cut. (less chance of getting a 'wobbly' cut)
just make sure you take your time while you cut. a good pair of safety glasses and keeping an eye on your line makes all the difference.
