I dunno... personally I love the Powell re-releases. I've been bugging George to release those graphics (or come up with designs along the same vein) for years. VC Johnson might actually be doing some new graphics for them so that'll be cool.
Remember, the re-issues were limited runs and were all in celebration of Powell's 25th Anniversary. I don't think they were a money grabbing scheme but rather a hommage to the past and a celebration of their history.
I think it's cool that the new kids can see something from the past, a harder edge than today's lame ass Flameboy graphics that are out there. Blind to this day is still making knock off Powell graphics.
I also think it's great that I can go out and buy a new deck with the rad old graphics rather than having to shell out a few $100 bucks on the O.G. decks when all i want to do is Hang them on my wall.
AAAAND!... everybody is bitching about how they want old school shapes and concaves. Have you guys tried any of the new boards out there? They rock. I'm skating a deck that's 7.5 wide. It's a freestyle board by old school standards but it rocks. New decks are stronger, lighter, and much more functional.
Powell is also just about the only company that has ANY old school shapes. Everybody else is sticking to the popsicle shape decks. At least Powell caters to the wishes of some of the old schoolers. How many are out there though? Probably not enough to support a whole run of oldschool mania. He's running a business after all.
The only thing I don't like about the Powell re-issue graphics is that they don't really respect the riders who supported, inspired, and symbolized those graphics. If you're going to re-release a graphic, put the O.G. rider's name on the bottom and give him some royalties. That's my 2 cents anyway (more like a buck fifty).

You made some good points Matt, at least Powell is trying to celebrate it's past. I don't know, I have a hard time riding the new school shapes. I'm 6'4" with a size 12 foot and those things feel like a rollerskate under my feet. I'll take my late 80's/ early 90's decks with ample upturned nose and wide tail and be happy with that.
Are those Powell Tech Decks really necessary? |
