There's this guy that paints mostly hand done Powell Ripper boards. Some of you guys here know him, you buy his stuff. That's awesome and I support that. However these boards the dude is making should stop. For some simple reasons.
The Powell ripper isn't his. Every fake Black Flag Reason for Living isn't a legitimate item, it's a way to separate your want from your wallet.
It's one thing when he made a one or two decks, that is rad. Now there are so many out there of the same damn Ripper deck it's getting to be like this guy is a subsidiary of Powell.
However it's one thing to make a few, and I am for that. It's col to hand paint a deck you always wanted(Like that Boyd Boyle form a few years back) it's another to infringe and continuously show a predilection to the same image...that means you keep painting the same shit to make money! No matter how your position it, crop it or change the colors IT IS NOT your intellectual property however you change it.
So when I see a myspace page, flickr.com or deviantart.com page filled with bootlegs, dude, you should check your head.
I shit on your efforts hand painting Ripper guy.
Just fucking stop.
Thanks. |

i'm going to have to totally agree with you there. 1 or 2 is cool, anymore than that, and you're just a bootlegger. i'll only ever do one version of my paintings, and that's it. i get a lot of people emailing me about re-painting a piece that is sold, and the answer is always NO. I respect the folks that bought a painting from me, and wouldn't want to cheapen their investment. |

Its crazy the stuff people get away with. There are dudes in the garage kit industry that make a living wage (40-50g a year) doing nothing but sculpting and reproducing licensed Marvel and DC characters. A few of them have been shut down but for every one they catch, 2 more pop up. I'd suspect in those situations Marvel and DC chose their battles. They'd only go after the producer if it was worth it. Powell on the other hand isn't as big as Marvel or DC. I'd imagine they would want to protect everything they have. |

Richie Griswold can dance the hully-gully since on his Flickr.com account everything is sold, or says "on Ebay" and fuck anyone that calls themselves a skate artist that just is repainting another's work.
VCJ I hear needs work. |

Kray, I know we've had our differences and this is not meant as an insult in any way;
but do you seriously think Powell Peralta would give a shit if they saw someone bootlegging your art ? |

I have to chime in on this thread.... for a lot of reasons....
Mostly that I own the ripper decks that Richie made..... and I asked him to (or hired him) to make for me. He has not done a Powell ripper deck for a while now. He has done only 2 that I know of that I don't own or that I did not ask for. I understand the last ripper deck he did was the Boobs Ripper spoof deck (similar to the one done for the Rip the Ripper Show). I had seen Richie's art on a few other Powell inspired decks (before the rippers were made for me) and I had already hired a few other guys I met on ebay and online to make custom ripper decks for me. I loved his big bold style on other designs and wanted some custom ripper art to go with my 100+ ripper decks I had. For those that know the ripper image from Powell, Richie's work is unique and to me was like nothing Powell has done. Sure it is clearly the ripper image from VCJ to start with, but with a twist.... I think almost Every serious skate company has done a spoof of the ripper at some point, I should know, I bought them all. Heck Powell even did an art show called Rip the Ripper to bring focus to it. I thought it was a Brilliant idea from Powell to soak in just how far and wide that iconic image had gone over all these years. I think Richie did a bit more than just copy it to make a quick buck. Each deck was a bit different and he never mass produced anything for sale. I am guessing Richie even got tired of me asking for "just one more"....LOL.
For the record I sent the pictures of his work to Powell and suggested his talents were better put toward getting a job there in their art department, so I know a few guys that work at Powell still today and had them take a look at his work. My understanding is that Powell was not concerned about it from a copyright violation standpoint (as long at he does not mass produce anything). They told me they did have a lawyer on hand and they do shut down a few ebay sales per week that were selling knock off ripper shirts and other copyright violations of the classic powell images.
It sounds like you could take an honest peek at yourself to see if just maybe all art starts with an idea that has been done somewhere else before we get to add our little tweak to it....

I will post some pictures up here to let the SnB crew chime in on if this is art...or just a stolen copy of VCJ's work. I will post some of the spoof decks from skate companies that all have active members here on SnB. Now that VCJ is back at Powell, maybe we can get the master to chime in....
If you want to be upset or blame anyone in the case of these extra rippers being made....blame the crazy collector (just me!). I am also the one getting the one off custom reissue ripper decks (not made from Richie), I admit these reissue one offs look more like the VCJ original artwork.....because they are (made from original reissues).
Pics up next....
Thanks,
Chris |

Here is one of the first custom ripper decks that I had done for me. This was cool guy I met doing other boards on ebay. I had asked for Gator colors of orange and blue with the ripper matching on bottom and top with no ripper stripes (a nod to the hosoi pattern instead).
Here is the top side:
with mini ripper.
Here is the 2nd custom ripper I remember hiring an ebay guy to do for me.
He did some cool airbrushing with different patterns. This was blood ripping out of a metal plate background.
Here is the 3rd one I remember having done...this is the winged ripper and done with black light glow paint. Again is a different artist that I met doing other decks for sale on ebay. I asked him to make a custom ripper related one. Again this one has art top and bottom to match.
Here is it with the glow working...
Here is the deck that inspired it.
I always wanted Powell to do a deck from both sides. I gave up waiting...so I had to have one made.
At the time I also wanted Powell to use some Glow paints....again, gave up waiting and had one done myself. I had fun sending copies of the art to Powell.... note they just released their 2nd set of black light ripper decks last week....(not saying these inspired their art department....just saying mine was done 2 years ahead of what they are doing now.....I like to think there could be a connection. For a collector it is a dream to think I somehow influenced a future ripper design). Here is a pic of their current glow rippers:
Note the big bold theme....(wink)
Note these decks show above were all done before asking Richie to make any for me. Richie had not done any ripper decks before I asked him to make one for me. |
