I'll throw this one out to y'all. What do you think of Powell re-releasing all of those old graphics? Does it decrease the value of your original decks (sentimentally and financially) or is it just great to see those cool images released again?

I wonder if the original riders got paid any royalties on those re-releases? The only one with a name attached to it was the Gelfand "Ollie" deck. The others were just described as "Mountie", "Skull and Snake", and "Viking Skull"; when we all know they were really Harris, McGill and Welinder.

I've been told VCJ might do some new graphics for Powell too. It'll be interesting to see what the old master can produce after such a long time away from the industry.

If the new stuff is going to be anything like the recent "VCJ Flight" and "VCJ forever" decks I'd say he should maybe keep his pen in the drawer the same way Jordan should have kept his shoes in the closet.

You can see all the new Powell stuff at
http://www.skateone.com Anybody ever even HEARD of the Caballero "Propellor Head" before this re-issue?

Matt

I think what Powell is doing is real lame. If they want to release the old graphics they should do so on the old deck shape. If they want to release say, a new Gelfand deck, it should have some input from Ollie himself.
Powell is ripping off its former pros by doing this. You think Kevin Harris will see a cent from the Mountie reissues?
But then again, being an unrepentant Santa Cruz fan, I always thought Powell was lame anyway.

These Powell reissues are lame. Yes, I have a McGill and an Ollie, at least the Ollie has a decent shape to it. Only a matter of time before the McGill goes on ebay.
There's a picture of the original Caballero propeller deck in an issue of Action Now, I think it was January 1981. He's sitting with Stacy Peralta holding the deck. Only place I've ever seen that deck - probably a prototype.
Now why doesnt Powell reissue the decks in thier original shapes? I don't know, (probably a money thing)but I'd buy them. A limited edition run of reissues would rule.

It's a money thing - there's only 3 or 4 presses running in the US and they're doing ALL the decks for everybody... the oldschool presses were no doubt destroyed by very small minds.

Anyone know where in Toronto you can purchase any Powell re-issues?

From the stores I've talked to, no one wants to carry them cause they won't appeal to the new school market. That's understansable, however that's the same thing they've said about longboards for years, no more stores are stocking them than ever before...

amen- they are "lame." seeing those graphics on a new board conjures no memories of "the good old days," when we were innocent in our youth. they are blatantly out of place, and all in an attempt to seduce the past- in vain.

Most of the Canadian stores are being supplied by former Powell Peralta pro Kevin Harris' Vancouver-based Ultimate Skateboard Distribution (there is a Toronto area distro centre now to)... chances are they aren't stocking the Powell reissues due to the limited nature of the consumer base - they stock, naturally, what the lowest common denominator are looking to buy.
