Someone said musical talent, that is funny. Considering Sid Vicious had no clue as to how to play a bass guitar when they recorded Bollocks.

That was Steve Jones, with some help from Matlock.

The pistols predate them all and for that reason are far more important. I guess you had to be there at the time to know how fucking terrible things were in 1975/76. The pistols did it all and first (in england) and were the reason that those other bands stopped playing crappy pub rock and did something worthwhile.

The Damned were first to release a record, not the Pistols.

The Pistols weren't the reason The Clash and others started playing punk rock either. That award goes to The Ramones, who played a show which future members of the Pistols and Clash were in attendance, as well as other future bands.

The Pistols were influential, but not first.

I'll add this. While I wasn't there (maybe Falconneil was, dunno), I can full on hear the Ramones infuence on those early Clash singles. The first Pistols singles sound like the Dolls, minus the Shangi-Las. I think the Clash did the Ramones, yes. Pistols? Full on Dolls/ Slade/ Mott glam. Done with a sledgehammer as a guitar. And a smart OG bass player to write the songs. Two cents.

Saints and Birdman were Ozzie pub rock not punk. (will agree that there is a hugh common ground but to call them punk causes me issues.)

As for the HardOns saw em heaps and they preferred to call there selves Thrash metal. (BondiBoy66 even Jammed with Blackie or was it Ray I forget..) Lime Spiders were more Pyschadelic put I guess thats on the fringe of Punk

Were the Ramones Punk? I tend to think of em as thrash pop metal but what the hey its only rockin roll and I like it

like it

yes I do

There's nothing metal about the Ramones....... not even close. No 'thrash' in there either.

Yes, I know. They should have kept Glen, and replaced Lydon.

Well, the Clash are about as tough as The Cranberries.
Joe Strummer sucks.

Could you be anymore clueless????

First off, the Pistols were a bunch of wusses.

Roger Daltry is tougher than the Pistols combined. Same with Paul Simonon. Those two were tough guys. Can't say that for any of the Pistols.

Joe Strummer was a great songwriter, much better than any of the Pistols.

Here's a quarter kid, go buy a clue....

Great response. That's all I can say about that psycho-babble you just laid out.

Joe Strummer a great songwriter? Your opinion.
I like the Pistols. My opinion.

When I want your opinion on my opinion I'll tell your mom it is OK for you to talk to me.

Go away kid you bother me.

Neil, this bit of the initial post was aimed at you:

And I'm talking now - 2010. Obviously I have tons of repect for those that were there, but I'm going to attempt to limit this to present day.

I wanted to separate history/significance from the matter of "Which would you be more likely to throw on tonight?" Your points are of course valid and accurate. And moto: Technically that 7/4/76 Ramones gig was a day after the first shared Clash/Pistols gig, but I'm sure they had the records already so either version is ok with me.

I kinda observe that the Pistols are generally for those over 45 (who were there and remember the impact), those under 15 (who are just getting into the shit), and civilians (non-Punk fans). One cool record no doubt, but in 2010, they are dwarfed by the entire world which is the fucking Clash.

And Hanoi, thanks for the analysis. I love hearing from dudes like you, moto and Neil who are pretty deep music fans with an ear for hearing influences and parallels. Always enjoy geeking out with debates about music history.

And with that being said, just try to fuck with this:

Disclaimer: I am about 50% gay for Paul, so take my comments with a grain of salt.

1. Psycho-babble? Go look it up...... I'll wait.

2. Joe Strummer being a great songwriter is many people's opinion, including a lot of songwriters.

3. She ain't gonna hear ya, she's been dead for 10 years.

4. I see you didn't use the quarter I gave ya.

5. I now see your screen name has nothing to do with skateboards.
