In light of all the various copyright issues and discussions flying around right now, I thought it would be helpful to disseminate some useful links on what constitutes fair use of copyrighted material and what counts as infringement to aid you all in staying out of trouble.

This is a very thorough and comprehensive website addressing all aspects of copyright law. If you are an artist or a company owner, it is in your best interests to understand this subject.

Some of the most critical concepts for skate company owners and artists to understand are:

What types of creative work does copyright protect?

When can I use a work without the author's permission?

What are the exceptions to the rule that the creator of a work owns the copyright?

How are copyrights enforced? Is going to court necessary?

What Is Fair Use?

Disagreements Over Fair Use: When Are You Likely to Get Sued?

Here is a useful tool for considering whether your idea falls within the boundaries of fair use or whether it is more likely to be considered an infringement.

Keep in mind that the answers to these questions are matters of opinion. One person may view them differently than another, just as one attorney may differ from another and one judge may differ from another. They are rules of thumb.

The rest of the website is also useful although it is primarily geared towards copyright issues likely to be encountered in academia.
