I heard so much hype about the real wood charcoal over the briquettes and figured i would give it a try on the Weber.

The heat is great they cook super hot and are a joy to cook on compared to the briquettes but they just do not have that smokey bbq flavor of briquettes.

Now it has me thinking that all my life that smokey bbq flavors I have always liked was nothing more than lighter fluid residue and glue that hold the briquettes together I have been lighting the real wood charcoal in my chimney with one single piece of fat wood so it is 100% hippie.

any input from the bbq heads?

If you're wanting smoke flavor, then you need to use the charcoal plus small pieces of wood. Oak, Hickory, ash, cherry, and apple are good for smoking. That's my opinion. I do quite a bit of bbqing in general and in competitions.

yea i hear ya i have a bullet smoker and do some smoking mostly with apple wood since its cheap from a local orchard.
Just seems the briquettes had much more of a smokey flavor than the wood with neither of them having smoking wood on them.
I can soak a couple chunks for tomorrow and see how that turns out.
