made it. splurged on a couple meals out this weekend, nothing too severe - made some good choices @ the grocery & spent $40 on a weeks worth on decently healthy food:

ground turkey/blackbeans/tomatoes/onion - made TGM's THM's Turkey chili (5 big portions - TRY IT)

chix thighs on special - $1.42 for 4
pintos
eggs
asparagus
lettuce
spinach
tuna
deli turkey

made a batch of iced tea - have coffee - protien powder

i'm getting off the sugar/white flour train for a while, so this'll do...

thx for the good words -

Back in the early 90's, me and my then GF went vegetarian- and about the same time, went through an unemployed spell.

After paying rent for the month, we'd buy 10 lb. bags of onions, rice, potatoes, pancake batter, pasta, and dry beans.

Being a professional cook, I was suprised how many different ways I was able to make some edible shit out of the same basic ingredients.

Also, working in resturants is a great thing- eat something when you get to work, nibble throughout the day, and grab your "employee meal" before you go home. When I was single, I only needed a little food in the house for my days off.

Remember- if you are the type that goes back and forth between feast and famine- when you have cash, always buy a little extra staples. Actually, it makes good sense for everybody in these economic times. Stock up on things that will keep awhile- canned goods, pasta, flour, dry beans, spices, etc.

A few times during the last few months of 2008, we actually had to hit a few food banks in the area.... kind of depressing. I've been at my job for ten years, but Sandy was out of work for a whole year. When it came down to either buying more food or Christmas presents for our daughter, we hit the food banks. Thank God for them.

If anyone here is doing okay right now- PLEASE- donate to local charities that provide to food banks. I used to think that they were for the "bums" that didn't want to work, or just spend their money on beer and drugs- but actually going to the food banks opened my eyes. Lots of families. Please, Help out if you can.

Food I've got a bit of. Where's the 'pay-my-rent' bank?
