If you cant freestyle, you cant skate.
freestyle is the whole essence of skating. anybody that didnt put in several hundred hours skating in circles in the driveway is missing out on some serious skills and background needed to actually be a real skater. dont tell me you couldnt do some space-walks or walk the dog, or do an oldschool kickflip, or two board daffy, or samoan squat, or some other kind of trick directly related to freestyle right here, right now. of course you could. [I hope]. hell, I'd say if you can at least propell yourself down the street without pushing, you can freestyle. skating is free, you have to add the style.
Thanks Doctor for the support, great to hear it from YOU!
You are totally right: Board control is the key to skateboarding.
Look, I had no half pipe back in 1982, so I invented to yoyo plant to get that 'inverted feeling'.
Btw, a skater should not be labled how many 360's he/ she can do, but anyone who spins more than 2 will draw some attention and any bystander will appreciate it.
In the last couple of years I started to work on my two footed spins and I got from 5-10 to an easy 25 on my steel wheeled setup (as seen in my clip). It's so much FUN and it proves that even when you're over 40 you can improve.
And, a blast from my past on a half pipe:

Ha, I used to have that Tracker shirt, a green one I think. I remember wearing it to the Del Mar finals in '84. Same contest McGill busted out the McTwist for the first time. Everyone's jaw hit the floor when he nailed that one.
I guess if you count Tic Tacs, 360s and Christies as freestyle, then yeah, I've done some freestyle.
A Christie was the first trick I learned after Tic Tacs. I remember being so stoked that I could do a Christie. |

I remember spending a weekend trying to do more and more 360s. Then I would try spinning the other way. I think my best was 5 both directions. I am so off balance now that one can seem impossible at times. I may have to spend another weekend making myself sick spinning again. |

Yes, there are some, but most of them hide or skate.....
Keith Renna (rennagate?) skates Freestyle, Terry Synnott....then this dude from Canada 'Freestyler'....my memory fades.
The international Freestyle platform is here: http://www.wfsafreestyle.org/f/forum/
The Germans and other German speaking folks hang around here http://www.freestyle-skateboarding.de/
Then http://www.ncdsa.com/ has a Freestyle section.
There ARE younger Freestylers (under 1 around and numbers are getting bigger every year. It is interesting, but it's a niche within a niche.
I don't care, I just skate! |

This is a hilarious topic.
Used to be able to do 20+ in the late 70's.
Now, more like 10-12 consistently.
Whenever I spin at the park, all the kids laugh.
20 minutes later they are all trying them when they think
I am not looking. Then I get to laugh.
I still can't ollie though......................... |

Naw, a daffy was when you were riding two boards and doing a nose wheelie on one and a tail wheelie on the other.
A christie was when you were squatting down on your board with one leg out in front of you. Jay Adams can be seen doing 'em in the Dogtown/Z-Boys doc. |
