My son's been asking for a skateboard for his birthday (SWEET!). Of course, he wants a Lightning McQueen one. I think I can do better.
I haven't seen any discussion about this for a while. Anybody have any idea what to get him as far as deck size and width? He's only about 37 inches tall
Or do I get the department store setup and let him destroy it? |

Something a little wider and longer than what you'd think.
That way he'll be more stable with a wider stance, less prone to shooting out, and tic-tac movements will be a little more sluggish and slow rather than quick and whippy, as well as having the extra width for side to side maneuverability and potential foot slippage.
Think of it as learning to ride on a sheet of ply board rather than a 2x4..
Once the basics are gained, the decks can be step down to trick size models.
You can also crank the back wheels down to aid in speed control. |

^^ good tip and completely true. I ended up getting my son a Saiz mini. Super stable and he loves riding it....if you didn't want to go that route, buy him a reissue! I loved getting him a NOS Saiz to ride

Had Tim at 5Points make a mini Alva whaletail for my son. He loves it.

Awesome tips from everyone... thanks.
Taos, how old is your kid?
Forrest -- great idea on cranking down the nuts -- wouldn't have thought of that.
Keep 'em coming. |
