Most of the riding mowers are made in China...including John Deere. I'd go with a Z-Turn Toro or Cub Cadet. The commercial versions are like 7 grand, but the homeowner types are a lot less and both are available at Lowes or Home depot. My Cub Cadet was 4 grand, three blade, 52 inch cut, with a v-twin 22 hp. It's smooth as shit and will go way faster than you need to. A walk behind is good, like a Skag or Gravely, but they are hard to drink beer while mowing and that is important. The Toro is a good 42" Z-turn and around 2800. Whatever you get, make sure it's a Zero Turn. Once you use one, you'll never, ever go back. There really is that much difference. |

| Del, thanks for the tips. Yep, I'm definately getting zero turn and sit down (with a PBR holder). I was looking at club cadet as they seem the best price, but I heard they can break down. Have you had any issues with yours? A place here has some husqvarna priced really good. I look on craigslist for used, but it's only a couple hundred more to get new and they come with a 3 yr residential warrenty. |

But you gotta get 'em at the John Deere Implement, right? I'm told that JD has licensed their name to sell at some big box stores. That stuff is not the same quality as the mower you can get at the store that sells combines and earth movers. Correct me if I'm wrong (or if the mechanic I heard if from is spreading propaganda).
Mostly it's the decks that aren't the same quality as the John Deere mowers sold at implement dealers. |

| Had no issues with my Cub Cadet. My Mom-in-law (rip) had a Husquevarna and it was a total POS. She traded in for a Cub Cadet non Z-Turn and had no issues with it. |

They are made in the US...some, like mine have a kawasaki (Japanese) engine however. I think most of the riders are actually made in one plant. (Horicon, Wisconsin I believe)
Give me the JD model that is made in China and sold here in the US. |

I have a little Cub Cadet push/walk behind and aspire to oening a yard that will warrant buying a rider. The only problem s I know of with Cub Cadet is that they used to be difficult to find back in the days of private dealerships. Not the case now.
A friend of mine has the Z-turn model and it is a BMF. |

Regarding garden tractors/compacts...The 100 series are available at the big boxes as well as JD dealers. Same tractors. These are your basic riding mowers. Anything larger (300/500/700) is only through JD dealers. |
