| Yup, you must be right. That did cross my mind but I just rolled with it anyway. I guess I better bid on it and give it to my daughter. Oh well. |

Butterflies not skulls...
No, I still like it. I'm use to being critiqued. I just didn't want to beat a dead horse. It was posted in a couple spots and I was getting the impression that it didn't fit with people's sense of aesthetics. I know it's made well and it took some work but that doesn't mean its going to target the audience here. I hadn't ever painted on a deck before and I just rolled with what seemed natural to me on a personal level. It was more me making something that I liked than directly making it relate to D-town. I just thought Herwig was giving me an honest response and the silence around the deck had already developed my suspicions that the dominant imagery conflicted with the majority.

Even though butterflies aren't in my wheel house I do appreciate the level of detail each individual deck has. |

OK, here you go. I never critique stuff but since you begged...
The butterfly shapes are weirdly rendered (blobby) and just not pleasing. Poor symmetry? Also could use detail work in the wings (negative space) and varying griptape colors - butterflies are supposed to be delicate, detailed and colorful - not black and blobby.
Red glue stuff looks sloppily applied. Some other colors would look nice too - again butterflies are supposed to be colorful.
Photos are blurry and dark.
A background would be nice too (blue sky, grass, typical springtime shit).
That enough, Mr Gumb?

Thanks Sticks!

I can see what you're saying about the butterfly shapes. Especially the one the h-street is on. Although the focus was suppose to be on the miniature decks not the butterfly wings. The wings were only supposed to be the framing device to the painted decks. Different colors of grip may have been interesting but I was trying to stay honest to the materials of grip and wood and avoid getting too caught up with background or variations in wing color. Maybe the actual shapes could have been tighter.
Sticks wrote: Red glue stuff looks sloppily applied. Some other colors would look nice too - again butterflies are supposed to be colorful.
The red "glue stuff" is paint. The grip tape was squished down to the deck with a layer of paint underneath. Similar to how the individual decks were transferred in to the paint. I was doing this to give some relief to the object and accentuate the layered collage like quality. As far as having multiple colors around the butterflies....well there are. It may be difficult to tell in the photograph but all the reds surrounding the grip are different variations of red ranging from orangish to more purplish in color.
Sticks wrote: Photos are blurry and dark.
The photos? All the colored images of the decks are hand painted. There is a transfer under the paint on all of the decks in black and white tones that may be a bit dark. This was done to create a base for a grisaille style miniature painting of each deck to occur. None of which are blurry in person. Therefore I'm a bit confused as to what you are referring to here.
Sticks wrote: A background would be nice too (blue sky, grass, typical springtime shit).
Again, I was trying to stay true to the materials being used. Wood equals wood. Grip equals Grip. Painting of miniature deck equals miniature little painting. I thought the standardized black butterflies allowed a context that would not detract from the more detailed rendering of the individual little decks. Also, the black butterflies were a way to make a more poppy statement when viewing the deck at a distance while the small detail oriented decks were to provide a way to draw you in and keep you interested while up close.

Is it ever enough. It really should be seen in person. The glazes on the decks glow like little jewels when in natural light. The decks will be hanging for the final night of the auction. I'm hoping it'll do better when people can stand in front of it. You ready to bid on it now?
p.s...you are a perceptive guy, I'm glad you're not in law enforcement; besides I've gotten better over the last decade. |
