Why is it that the only wood considered good for making skateboards American/Canadian maple from the great lakes? This seems very convenient for American and Canadian skateboard manufacturers. Surly there must be wood somewhere else that is just as good or perhaps even better than Canadian maple? What about northen European woods?
I don't know much about this but it had been bothering me for quite some time being someone in Scotland interested in Skateboard manufacture.
So why does it have to be maple and why does it have to come from Canada? |

good point.
I`m from Aus and there is some top quality hard wood that would(ha ha) be fantastic for manufacturing decks.
has any company tried Aus wood for decks? |

There are a lot of European companies making wood using Euro wood.
There's at least one thread elsewhere on this forum on why Hardrock Maple has been determined to be the best for skateboards.
Chinese "Maple" is actually a type of birch, which apparently doesn't have a tight enough grain or something. |

Climate & geography - a short grow season, the right mix of temperature and humidity and nutrient rich land means the wood grain is small and tight -thus making it rock hard and more durable than maple grown on different boreal plains... and it's specifically eastern Canadian maple that is the most superior... northern Quebec and Ontario to be more specific. |

It has something to do with the climate. How's that for a non answer. I'm sure there's other good wood in the world, except for maybe China (hahahaha). My theory wood be that since most of manufacturing began in the States...they went to the nearest source. |

Wisconson and parts of Michigan produce decent maple -although it's much more expensive for some reason. |
